SMYRNIUM OLUSATRUM
It warmeth a cold stomach and openeth a stoppage to the liver and spleen.
It is also called Horse Parsley, Wild Parsley and the Black Pot-herb. Similar to Wild Angelica, it is sometimes mistaken for it by collectors. It is a biennial growing to about four feet (1.2 m) high and producing yellowish- green flowers.
Where to find it: It is usually cultivated in gardens, but prefers coastal regions.
Flowering time: Early to midsummer. The seed is ripe in late summer, and is almost black, hence the name Black Pot-herb.
Astrology: It is a herb of Jupiter and therefore friendly to nature.
Medicinal virtues: It is good to move women's courses, to expel the afterbirth, to break wind, to provoke urine, and helpeth the strangury. These things the seeds will do likewise. Boiled in wine or bruised and taken in wine the herb or seeds are effectual in the biting of serpents.
Modern uses: This herb is not used by professional herbalists at the present time; other remedies for flatulence, such as Fennel and Aniseed, are more popular.

| Alpine Strawberries |
|

|
Fragaria vesca is a cousin of the wild strawberry. It is found in woods and grasslands in Europe, western Asia, North America, and temperate areas in Chile. The word straw in strawberry comes from the verb to strew, referring to the tangle of vines with which the plant covers the ground. Cultivated strawberries were developed from the wild ones.

The common name 'Winged Everlasting' refers to the wings on the stems. This plant is often grown as an annual in cold climates. The papery white flowers with yellow centers are being used in dried flower bouquet. The flowers should be cut for drying as soon as they open. An additional ornamental trait is the silvery-white foliage of this plant. The flowers of Winged Everlasting attract bees and butterflies.

|
Anise is a dainty, white-flowered urnbelliferous annual, about 18 inches high, with secondary feather-like leaflets of bright green, hence its name (of mediaeval origin), Pimpinella, from dipinella, or twicepinnate, in allusion to the form of the leaves.
It is a native of Egypt, Greece, Crete and Asia Minor and was cultivated by the ancient Egyptians. It was well known to the Greeks, being mentioned by Dioscorides and Pliny and was cultivated in Tuscany in Roman times. In the Middle Ages its cultivation spread to Central Europe.

| Artemisia |

These hardy, shrubby or herbaceous plants are from Asia, Europe and North America. They belong to the Daisy family, Compositae. Some Artemisias are grown for their ornamental or fragrant leaves and others, for their flowers. A. tridentata (Sage Brush) is a shrubby native of desert and semi-desert regions in the West. A. vulgaris (Common Mugwort) is a perennial, herbaceous kind that is often a pestiferous weed. A. Abrotanum (Southernwood, Lad's Love or Old Man) grows 2 to3 feet high and has gray, fragrant, finely divided leaves and small yellow flowers in August. A. ponticum (Roman Wormwood) has very divided, feathery leaves that are whitish or ash-gray underneath.
